Author(s): Farhan A. Salem
Pages: 1-17 Paper ID: 131402-6565-IJMME-IJENS Published: April, 2013
Abstract: To help in facing the two top challenges in developing mechatronic systems, while maintaining desired accuracy and to optimize system level performance to meet the design requirements, this paper proposes an accurate mathematical and simulink models for accurate mechatronics design and verification of both system and control of motions throughout Mechatronics systems design and development process, including proper selection, analysis, integration and verification of the overall system and sub-systems performance in terms of output speed, angle, torque, current, acceleration and signals, resulting in simplifying and accelerating Mechatronics systems design process. The proposed models intended to be used for research purposes in mechatronics motion systems design, motion control applications, as well as, for the application in educational process. The proposed model can be modified to include any control strategy and/or any actuator. The model was created and verified using MATLAB simulink software.

Title: Planned Engineering Training and the Role it Plays in Improving the Quality of the Execution of Projects: An Applied Study on the Projects of the UoH (University of Hail)
Author(s): Mohammed Al-Nais, Isam A. Q. A. R. El Badawi
Pages: 18-25 Paper ID: 136702-9595-IJMME-IJENS Published: April, 2013
Abstract: The great economic progress and the developmental projects in the infrastructure in the KSA calls for quality engineering training throughout the kingdom. A survey of the status quo of the engineering training that is specific to quality and giant projects in Hail revealed that this kind of training is non-existent. Universities are expected to play a leading and effective role in this regard. The applied engineering training plays a leading role in achieving the highest standards in the execution of projects. In addition, training that is highly marked by a spirit of applied practicality in design, supervision and execution helps engineers to make the right decisions. The study proposes an innovative model for the relation between the management of engineers’ training and the quality expert responsible for creating the strategies and rules for quality in the cooperation or institution, in addition to innovating solutions to the measurement problems throughout all the stages of execution. The study surveyed the opinion of engineers involved in the projects at UoH and determined the content of the engineering training courses necessary to ensure the improvement of the quality in the execution of projects.

Pages: 26-32 Paper ID: 138002-6767-IJMME-IJENS Published: April, 2013
Abstract: Pallets are used mostly in storing heavy and large items in different industries across the globe. Reason for using pallet is to ensure safe material handling and storage of the material. Wooden pallets are usually used in industry. But wood is unfortunately not suited by environmental conditions in Pakistan. Hi Tech Plastic Industry, Wah Cantt is an industry that manufactures pallets for different defense related organizations in Pakistan. In this research a pallet is designed and analyzed by comparing various materials on Pro-E and ANSYS respectively. Analysis is done by considering uniformly distributed static force on pallet. From the results obtained from analysis done on pallet using ANSYS suggests that PVC made pallets are excellent in comparison to other pallets because of less deformation in shape as compared to other material pallets used in this analysis.

Title: Using Optical Mouse as a Position Feedback Sensor for AGV Navigation
Author(s): Kazi M. Hossain, Arif A. Sohel
Pages: 33-37 Paper ID: 1310602-9393-IJMME-IJENS Published: April, 2013
Abstract: The control, navigation and interaction with the working environment of Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV) are indispensable processes for material handling in a Flexible Manufacturing System(FMS) . In this paper, the prospect of using an optical mouse as an economical yet efficient alternative sensor for AGV navigation and control is depicted. This work emphasizes on the supervision and surveillance over the location, planning and operation of an AGV from a central control panel using a conventional personal computer. An experimental setup is planned and carried out to evaluate the proposed technique for AGV navigation in an indoor environment. The setup included a laboratory-made vehicle, a test bed and an optical mouse as navigation sensor. After the successful accomplishment of the tests, it is concluded that a smart central approach or vehicle approach can be followed for the prediction and avoidance of deadlocking and path planning for the AGV using an optical mouse sensor with a few inexpensive additional developments.

Title: Feature Extraction of EEG-P300 Signals Using Nonlinear Independent Component Analysis
Author(s): Arjon Turnip dan Demi Soetraprawata
Pages: 38-45 Paper ID: 138202-7474-IJMME-IJENS Published: April, 2013
Abstract: Electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings provide an important means of brain-computer communication, but their classification accuracy and transfer rate are limited by unexpected signal variations due to artifacts and noises. In this paper, a nonlinear independent component analysis (NICA) extraction method for brain signal based EEG-P300 are proposed. The performance of the proposed method is investigated through a comparison of well known extraction methods (i.e., AAR, JADE, and SOBI algorithms). Finally, the promising results reported here reflect the considerable potential of EEG for the continuous classification of mental states.

Title: Effects of Canola Biodiesel on a DI Diesel Engine Performance and Emissions
Author(s): Murari Mohon Roy, Majed Alawi and Wilson Wang
Pages: 46-53 Paper ID: 1311802-7474-IJMME-IJENS Published: April, 2013
Abstract: A direct injection (DI) diesel engine is tested with different biodiesel-diesel blends, such as B0 (neat diesel), B5 (i.e., 5 vol. % biodiesel and 95 vol. % diesel), B10 (10 vol. % biodiesel), B20 (20 vol. % biodiesel), B50 (50 vol. % biodiesel), and B100 (neat biodiesel) for performance and emissions under different load conditions. Engine performance is examined by measuring brake specific fuel consumption (bsfc) and fuel conversion efficiency (?f). The emission of carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbon (HC), nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon dioxide (CO2) and others are measured. Biodiesel shows a significant CO and HC reduction compared to diesel under low load operation; under high load operation, however, CO with biodiesel is increased a little and HC emissions are very similar to that with diesel. On the other hand, under low load operation, NOx emission with biodiesel is significantly increased than diesel; however, under high load operation, there is almost no change in NOx emissions with biodiesel and diesel.
Keywords:Canola biodiesel, diesel engine, engine performance, exhaust emissions.
