Title: An Automated Approach Based On Bee Swarm in Tackling University Examination Timetabling Problem

Pages: 8-23 Paper ID: 134902-8181-IJECS-IJENS Published: April, 2013
Abstract: A recently invented foraging behavior optimization algorithm which is the Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) algorithm has been widely implemented in addressing various types of optimization problems such as job shop scheduling, constraint optimization problems, complex numerical optimization problems, and mathematical function problems. However, the high exploration ability of conventional ABC has caused a slowdown in its convergence speed. Inspired from the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) method, an automated approach has been proposed in this study and is named as the Global Best Concept - Artificial Bee Colony (GBABC) algorithm. The algorithm is formulated using the global best concept, which is then implemented into the employed bee phase to incorporate the global best solution information into solutions. This is for the sake of leading the search process towards exploring other potential search regions to locate the best global solution. In addition, to improve its exploitation ability, a local search method has been incorporated into the onlooker bee phase. With the use of the global best concept and local search method, the convergence speed, exploration and exploitation abilities of the basic ABC have been significantly enhanced. Experiments are carried out on standard university examination benchmark problems (Carter’s un-capacitated dataset). Results obtained demonstrate that, generally, the GBABC had outperformed the basic ABC algorithm in almost all instances and its performance is also comparable to other published literature.

Title: Utilization of Google's Custom Search in Knowledge Finding on Digital Library
Author(s): Gonang May Perdananugraha
Pages: 24-29 Paper ID: 135402-8686-IJECS-IJENS Published: April, 2013
Abstract: Utilization of Google custom search in digital library has gave another option in knowledge finder/tools to explore the information among hundreds, thousands, even millions or more collections that the digital library have. The collections which digital libary have are in multi formats including text collections and multimedia collections, and those multi formats collections need to be identified, indexed, and searchable by users. Google custom search provide tools as knowledge finder in searching those collections in web based digital library. Google has known for its amazing search across the world wide web that laid on computer servers around the world, with its proven technology Google offer its custom search engine to be utilized and optimized freely to search and grab certain websites including web based digital library. Using Google custom search also have several weakness among them are un-independent application and of course depends on the internet, the strength using this technology is ability to find information and provide the pattern of information as Google search engine do.

Title: Stability Improvement of Power System Using Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor (TCSC)
Author(s): H. T. Hassan, Usman Farooq Malik, Irfan Ahmad Khan, Talha Khalid
Pages: 30-34 Paper ID: 136102-4848-IJECS-IJENS Published: April, 2013
Abstract: TCSC are used to improve power handling capability and reduce line losses in power systems. An additional feature of TCSC is its dynamic performance of power oscillation damping by varying the power flow in accordance with power oscillations. This behavior can be used to improve the stability of the system following a disturbance. In this paper eigenvalue-based methods for analysis have been studied and the stability improvement-steady state as well as transient stability of the system is improved using TCSC.
Keywords: Eigen-values, Power system oscillations, Steady-State Stability, TCSC, Transient Stability.

Title: Performance Comparison of MIMO Systems over AWGN and Rician Channels using OSTBC4 with Zero Forcing Receivers
Author(s): Navjot Kaur, Lavish Kansal
Pages: 35-41 Paper ID: 139302-8181-IJECS-IJENS Published: April, 2013
Abstract: Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) are used in wireless communications to achieve high data rates within the limited frequency spectrum. MIMO uses multiple transmitting and receiving antennas so as to utilize the advantages of spatial diversity. The performance analysis of MIMO system over AWGN and Rician fading channels using OSTBC4 as space time coding with Zero Forcing (ZF) receiver is presented. The performance can be improved by using antenna diversity at receiver side as the number of transmitting antennas is four in OSTBC4. In this paper, the Bit Error Rate (BER) analysis for M-PSK modulation using OSTBC4 over AWGN and Rician channels using zero forcing receivers is presented.
Keywords: MIMO, AWGN, Rician, OSTBC4, spatial diversity, antenna diversity, Zero Forcing, Bit Error Rate, M-PSK.

Author(s): Muhammad Junaid, Shakeel Ahmad, Qazi Waqar Ali
Pages: 42-47 Paper ID: 132902-6464-IJECS-IJENS Published: April, 2013
Abstract: Modern grid is the most complex man-made monitoring system, which is a wide-area monitoring system (WAMS). Next-generation smart grid will play a crucial role which will provide time synchronization of the data, the electric power system status (WAMS), protection and control. WAMS will provide safe and efficient energy transfers well as reliable and optimize the management of the grid. Fuses are used more in power supply, transmission lines and associated equipment. As a general rule increased Uses of fuses can be attributed to the low-cost, simple to maintain and reliable protection. Application of fuse is one of the main areas in the entire conservation plan and other significant protection coordination unit used in smart grids. This paper attempts to review the current status of the fuse according to its rated voltage and to improve smart grid dynamic response based on real-time monitoring system for high voltage fuse blown up Indicators, second is Earthing fault indicator and the third is bus bar temperature rise indicator. Furthermore dynamic protection mode is discussed and to provide more optional applications in the smart grid to provide high-voltage fuses blown up indicators, Earthing fault indicator and bus bar temperature indicator. We use GSM technology for monitoring indication.
