Abstract: The process of quality assurance in higher education is a complex process requiring many of the arrangements. This process consists of several stages; the most important stage is the evaluation. This paper provides the unified modeling language diagrams (UML) for the quality assurance evaluation process in any higher education institution. Also, the prototype implementation of this system is discussed. Our work in this paper is based on the Egyptian (QAAP) Quality Assurance and Accreditation Project. There are three stages for the evaluation process: self-evaluation stage, external evaluation stage, and peer reviewing stage. Our system focuses on the first and the second stage. Finally, the implementation of the system is provided

Pages: 12-20 Paper ID: 103402-9595-IJECS-IJENS Published: April, 2010
Abstract: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a subject that studies techniques for making computers exhibit intelligent behavior. Searching still remains one of the problem in AI. Bi-directional search is performed by searching simultaneously in forward direction from the initial node and in backward direction from the goal node. Bi-directional heuristic search algorithms need less time and space than their unidirectional versions. Bi-directional Heuristic Front to Front Algorithm (BHFFA) is one of the Bi-directional heuristic search algorithm. However, it has some disadvantages. It needs to store many unnecessary nodes prior to termination. Moreover, in large problem spaces the computational overhead for the selection of the next node to be expanded increases significantly. This paper presents a modification to the BHFFA called Iterative Deepening Bi-directional Heuristic Front-to-Front Algorithm (IDBHFFA) that has been analyzed and implemented using the 8-puzzle problem. The proposed algorithm performs BHFFA in a number of iterations. For each iteration, two thresholds are maintained, one for each search frontier. In each iteration, some non-promising nodes on a particular search frontier having cost estimates greater than the corresponding threshold value are pruned. The process continues with successive iterations with the thresholds increasing with each iteration. The proposed algorithm will return optimal solutions with an admissible heuristic function. It can minimize the computational time and memory space requirement of BHFFA considerably.

Abstract: At present, a great amount of information on the Web is presented in regularly structured objects. These are known as data records. A list of such objects in a Web page often describes a list of similar items; such as, a list of products to provide their value- added services. Therefore, it has become increasingly necessary to develop an effective process for extracting information from them. In this paper, we present a more effective method to perform the task. The proposed method is able to mine data records not only from a single Web page but also from an entire Web site. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated in respect to the previous methods in the literature. Our experimental results show that the proposed technique outperforms the existing techniques eventually. Finally, we compare the results of the experiments and discuss about the performance of the proposed method in the case of mining structured objects (data records).

Author(s): M. S. M. Elksasy, Hesham H. Gad
Pages: 28-35 Paper ID: 103902-5656-IJECS-IJENS Published: April, 2010
Abstract: Due to the development of digital control systems, hybrid stepper motors became more attractive to be used in robotics and computer numerical control machines where they have to perform high-precision positioning operations without any feedback sensor. However, at open loop control (especially at higher stepping rate), the speed response of the stepper motor suffer from large overshoot, oscillatory response and long settling time. Therefore, a closed loop control system essentially required for a good precise operation performance. However, due to the non-linear characteristics and the resonance problem of the hybrid stepper motor, it is difficult to settle the classical control systems with this type of motor. Moreover, the use of discrete pulses to drive the hybrid stepper motor in half stepping mode leads to jerky and noisy movements at high and low stepping rate respectively. The objective of the present paper is to use the PID control system to enhance the performance of the open loop control system to control the speed of the hybrid stepper motor for a given reference input. Also, a microstepping technique, which consists of sine and cosine waveforms, is also used to drive the hybrid stepper motor instead of discrete pulses. Therefore, a simulation program is constructed using MATLAB software version 7.7 to simulate the hybrid stepper motor performance in open loop, classical PID and modified PID control systems. Results show that the open loop control system suffers from oscillatory response at half stepping mode and form from large overshoot and long settling time at microstepping mode. Also, the classical PID control system didn’t give consistent results. And, the proposed control algorithm gives a better performance than that of the open loop even when the system is subjected to a sudden load disturbance up to 41% and working at high motor speed.

Pages: 36-40 Paper ID: 104302-8686-IJECS-IJENS Published: April, 2010
Abstract: This paper aims to develop a genetic algorithm to solve a network routing protocol problem. The algorithm has to find the shortest path between the source and destination nodes. In the literature, the routing problem is solved using search graph techniques to find the shortest path. Dijkstra's algorithm is one of popular techniques to solve this problem. The developed genetic algorithm is compared with Dijkstra's algorithm to solve routing problem. Simulation results are carried out for both algorithms using MATLAB. The results affirmed the potential of the proposed genetic algorithm. The obtained performance is similar as Dijkstra's algorithm.

Title: Automation of Irrigation System Using ANN based Controller
Author(s): S. Muhammad Umair, R. Usman
Pages: 41-47 Paper ID: 104602-5757-IJECS-IJENS Published: April, 2010
Abstract: Irrigation systems are as old as man itself since agriculture is the foremost occupation of civilized humanity. To irrigate large areas of plants is an onerous job. In order to overcome this problem many irrigation scheduling techniques have been developed which are mainly based on monitoring the soil, crop and weather conditions. Irrigation scheduling engrosses when to irrigate and how much water to be applied. Currently most of the irrigation scheduling systems and their corresponding automated hardware are fixed rate. Variable rate irrigation is very essential not only for the improvement of irrigation system but also to reduce the irrigation cost and to increase crop yield. The heart of automatic irrigation system (fixed rate or variable rate) is its control unit: as it controls irrigation time and water flow. Intelligent control based irrigation is necessitated to maximize the efficiency and production. Existing technologies varies from water balance or check book method to sophisticated sensor-based systems [1].Most of the irrigation systems use ON/OFF controllers. These controllers can not give optimal results for varying time delays and varying system parameters. This paper presents Artificial Neural Network (ANN) based intelligent control system for effective irrigation scheduling. The proposed Artificial Neural Network (ANN) based controller is prototyped using MATLAB. The input parameters like air temperature, soil moisture, radiations and humidity are modeled. Then using appropriate method, ecological conditions, evapotranspiration and type of crop, the amount of water needed for irrigation is estimated and then associated results are simulated.

Abstract: Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) has been adopted by telecom Next Generation Networks (NGN) and 3rd Generation Partnership Project’s IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS). Charging is one of the most fundamental components of any commercial SIP service. Service providers have to employ an online charging mechanism to support the prepaid payment model and to create flexible pricing policies that interwork with customers in real-time, to achieve marketing targets while improving customer experience. In this paper, we discuss the requirements of online charging mechanisms for SIP services, investigate the existing online charging mechanisms for SIP services namely AAA-based and SIP-based, and compare between them according to their security, performance, supported charging services, and supported service access types. Our contributions are: (1) comparing between AAA-based and SIP-based online charging mechanisms, (2) checking the vulnerability of the AAA-based online charging mechanism to charging attacks implemented by R. Zhang et al. on Vonage and AT&T; VoIP service providers, (3) identifying new security attacks against the latest SIP-based online charging mechanism –SIPCoin–.

Title: An efficient Scheme for Handling the Mobility with reduced packet loss in Internet Communication
Author(s): Farhana Ferdousi Liza, Khan Al-Farabi
Pages: 64-68 Paper ID: 107502-6161-IJECS-IJENS Published: April, 2010
Abstract: Mobility management in wireless Internet environment has become a vital issue. To handle the mobility in Internet the mostly used protocol is Mobile IPv4. In Mobile IPv4 protocol the two new entities are introduced. The entities are Home Agent (HA) and Foreign Agent (FA). The HA resides in home network of mobile node and it is used to track the current position of mobile node. The foreign agent resides in the foreign network which maintains the link with the home network of the mobile node on behalf of mobile node. But due to the limitation of address capability, triangle delay problem of Mobile IPv4 a new protocol is proposed which is known as Mobile IPv6. Mobile IPv6 [2] protocol enhances the communication system in mobile environment of Internet. But the major drawback of Mobile IPv6 is that it suffers from handover latency and packet loss problem. A new scheme is proposed in this paper to remove the limitations of Mobile IPv6. The newly proposed scheme uses the probability mechanism which is based on stochastic process. This probability mechanism is used to predict the future destination of mobile node in network domains. It is expected that it will reduce the handover delay and also reduce the packet loss during the communication in mobile environment of internet.

Pages: 69-72 Paper ID: 1010302-5454-IJECS-IJENS Published: April, 2010
Abstract: Adverse drug effects are a major cause of death in the world with tens of thousand deaths occurring across the world each year because of medication or prescription errors. Many of such errors involve the administration of the wrong drug or dosage by care givers to patients due to indecipherable handwritings, drug interactions, confusing drug names etc. The adoption of voice-based mobile applications could eliminate some of these errors because they allow prescription information to be captured and heard through voice response rather than in the physician’s handwriting. This paper presents a design and implementation of a Voice-based Mobile Prescription Application (vbmopa) to improve health care services. The application can be accessed through a mobile phone by dialing an appropriate number. This system could lead to costs and life savings in healthcare centres across the world especially in developing countries where treatment processes are usually cumbersome and paper based.

Abstract: Many state-of-the-art and cutting-edge universities in the world rely on wooden notice board hanging on a wall to display announcements. The overreliance of this practice in a university is still not enough to pass relevant information round as some of these problems are encountered: (1) Multiple people struggle and cluster a single wooden notice board for information just released, e.g. Exam results. (2) People mutilate, remove or destroy paper notices from the notice board leaving other people to be uninformed.(3) Some people do not have the time to settle down and read all the relevant information posted on a notice board especially where digital printout cannot be made easily. (4) There is unregulated display of information, difficulty in storage and no efficient reference to past relevant information being posted. Taking a case study of Covenant University where information is a vital key for everybody’s progress on campus. This research work looks at the development of a Digital Notice Board (DNB) program, which can be installed on various computers connected together by local area network (LAN) so as to increase the rate at which relevant information is being disseminated to the public within a certain location. The major strength of DNB is its usability with large electronic screen for display of information on numerous strategic points on university campus.
