Author(s): Emad Elnajjar, Mohamed Y. E. Selim, Farag Omar
Pages: 1-11 Paper ID: 111703-7575 IJBAS-IJENS Published: June, 2011
Abstract: The effects of different engine parameters: engine speed, injection timing, loading, compression ratio and different pilot fuel to gases fuel ratio, were experimentally used to investigate the overall generated noise from the dual fuel engine. Dual fuel engine noises were reported for almost the first time in this study by direct sound pressure level measurements and compared to the maximum cylinder pressure rise rate with respect to the engine crank angle. The study was conducted for three different fuels: pure diesel fuel, and dual fuel of diesel- LPG or natural gas. The study reported the location (crank angle) corresponding to maximum cylinder pressure and max pressure rise rate. The present work reported much higher SPL generated form burning a dual fuel compared to burning diesel fuel only.

Author(s): Ming Ye, Tao Qiu, RuYue Yuan, Liu Yang
Pages: 25-31 Paper ID: 113903-0808 IJBAS-IJENS Published: June, 2011
Abstract: The correlations between the yield of intracellular polysaccharide (LIP), the yield of extracellular polysaccharide (LEP) and the biomass of a Lachnum YM281 in submerged fermentation were studied. Results showed that there was a significant linear relationship between the yield of LIP (Y) and the biomass (Z): Z=12.561Y-0.0148 (R2=0.985). The yield of LIP (Y) and yield of LEP (X) were positively correlated, but the linear relationship was insignificant. Accordingly, in order to improve the two synchronously, the two response variables (X,Y) were integrated into a single response variable using the desirability functions and the fermentation conditions of LIP and LEP of Lachnum YM281 were optimized synchronously by uniform design to obtain the optimum condition: 46.6g/L glucose, 14.6g/L yeast extract, 6.50mg/L glycine, initial pH value =7.5, 12 days' fermentation at 25?, the other factors being the same as those of the basic fermentation condition. Under this condition, the yields of LIP and LEP increased by 2.35g/L and 6.28g/L, respectively, improving by 1.42 times and 1.23 times, respectively, compared to those before optimization.

Title: Efficiency Analysis in Rapier Loom
Author(s): A. N. M. Masudur Rahman, Md. Ruhul Amin
Pages: 38-42 Paper ID: 116203-8383 IJBAS-IJENS Published: June, 2011
Abstract: The study was carried out to find out the effects of various parameters on efficiency in rapier looms. To do so, the efficiency is analyzed by various parameters such as weaver’s skillness, loom speed, weave structure, pick density and R.H%, loom allocation per weaver, size take up %, tension on warp etc. The main objective of this study is to increase the efficiency and through that increase the productivity and profitability. Unlike in winding, warping and sizing where the emphasis is on the quality of preparation, in the loom shed, control of fabric quality as well as of productivity assumes significant importance. The weaving operation contributes by far the largest proportion to the cost of conversion of yarn into fabric. Surveys shown that the cost of actual weaving operation in mills with modern preparatory machines and automatic looms about 60%- 65% of the total cost for conversion of yarn into fabric. This means that a small increase in loom shed efficiency via productivity will result in considerable reduction of manufacturing cost. More importantly an increase in efficiency will bring in additional realization on the extra fabric available. For a medium size average mill, an increase of 2% in loom shed productivity can increase the annual cash flow by about Tk. Ten lakhs. Consequently, in evolving a satisfactory process control programmed for the loom shed, considerable weight age should be given to efficiency.

Author(s): Ming Ye, Yan Wang, Meishuang Qian, Xiao Chen, Xueqin Hu
Pages: 43-48 Paper ID: 115203-6060 IJBAS-IJENS Published: June, 2011
Abstract: Melanin was isolated from the mycelium of Lachnum singerianum by alkaline extraction, acid hydrolysis, and repeated precipitation with a yield of 8.85 g/100 g (dry weight basis). This melanin was soluble in alkaline solutions of NaOH and ammonia, but insoluble in water, HCl and common organic solvents (ethyl acetate, chloroform, ethanol, acetone and ethyl ether, etc.). And it was stable to light (UV light and natural light), reducing agent (sodium sulfite), additives (sodium benzoate, sucrose and sodium citrate) and some metal ions (Na+, K+, Mg2+, Mn2+, Ca2+ and Al3+), but unstable to hydrogen peroxide, citric acid, Vc, Cu2+ and Fe3+, which showed that it has a physico-chemical characteristics of typical melanin. When the concentration of this melanin was 200 mg•L-1, the scavenging rate of •OH, DPPH• and O2¯• radical were 52.64%, 41.2% and 43.48%, respectively. The IC50 values were 180.87 mg•L-1, 240 mg•L-1 and 275.27 mg•L-1, respectively. The results showed this melanin has a strong antioxidant activity, which suggested that this melanin can be used as a new antioxidant component in medicine or health products.

Title: Developing a Strategy for Creating and Assessing Internship Digital Media Curriculum in UAE University
Author(s): Hebatallah Bahgat El Semary
Pages: 64-72 Paper ID: 117503-9494 IJBAS-IJENS Published: June, 2011
Abstract: Creating and assessing a digital media curriculum is a challenge because of the difficulty in making the connection between concepts and applications..This paper describes an assessment experiment recently conducted to help us gain insight into students' thought processes. Students are observed and videotaped in a closed lab (Abu Dhabi TV) designed to help them understand concepts and to help us assess how they relate concepts to activities. Their input and feedback was compared with another group of students who were not enrolled in the same internship course (control group). The small size of the internship class precludes doing comparative studies where one group uses our curriculum material while the other uses nothing.

Abstract: This paper describes a rapid foundation assessment procedure that employs simple field and laboratory analyses to determine the suitability of a construction site at Calabar, southeastern Nigeria. While the laboratory tests were limited to gradation, Atterberg limits, specific gravity and triaxial shear strength, simplified Terzaghi-Meyerhof’s and Terzaghi-Peck’s equations were employed for the bearing capacity and settlement analyses, respectively. Results indicated that the foundation soil (medium dense sand) classified as silty sand (SM), following Unified Soil Classification System. Sand-sized particles ranged from 60 – 74 %, plasticity index from 21 to 30 and specific gravity values from 2.61 to 2.62. Analyses showed that the site recorded increases in values of both ultimate capacity (qf) and safe bearing capacity (qs) with depth; qf ranged from 373 kN/m2 at depth of 0.5 m to 634 kN/m2 at depth of 3.0 m, and qs 149 kN/m2 at depth of 0.5 m to 254 kN/m2 at depth of 3.0 m. The calculated values of qs (149 – 254 kN/m2) fall within established range of presumed bearing values for medium dense sand, which is 100 – 600 kN/m2, thus, indicating that (1) the foundation soil would have good stability, although moderate to high immediate compressibility may be expected (compression index of the soil ranged between 0.4 and 0.5), and (2) the testing program and analytical procedure were both, to some extent, reliable.

Abstract: Game theory is the formal study of decision-making where several players must make choices that potentially affect the interests of the other players. In this paper, we develop a combined computer oriented technique for solving game problems. In this technique, we implement Minimax-Maximin method, rectangular game, and convert the resulting game into Linear Programming (LP) problem. Finally, to find out the strategies of both players, we incorporate the usual Simplex method of Dantzig [11]. We develop our computer technique by using the programming language MATHEMATICA [16]. We will show the efficiency of our program for saving labor and time for solving game problems by presenting a number of numerical examples.

Abstract: Recently, some fertility determination methods by determining estrus cycle through analysis of the existence and level of estradiol hormones metabolites in urine such as estrone conjugate (E1C) and pregnanediol 3-glucuronide (PdG) have been developed. Those hormone determination analyses were using destructive methods, which were complicated and highly-cost. Therefore, a fertility analysis was conducted in this research by determining the E1C and PdG level using the FTIR method. The samples in this research were urine of 3 estrus and non-estrus periods of the cycle from 10 rat. Those samples were analysed by 2 methods: qualitative method with vaginal smears which observing proportion of mature and immature epithelial cells of vagina, and FTIR method. The FTIR analysis results were spectrums with absorbancy numbers which then been used to determine E1C and PdG level. The absorbancy values were compared relatively with similar creatinine values throughout the cycles. Creatinine was identified on ketone peak number 1730 cm-1. The low SD values showed that creatinine had constant values throughout the cycles. Functional group absorbance represented E1C and PdG were compared to creatinine. PdG was identified on aldehyde peak number 1639 cm-1, carboxyl acid number 1745 cm-1 and alkyl 1379 cm-1. E1C was identified on alkyl peak number 416 cm-1, aromatic 709 cm-1 and hydroxyl 3468 cm-1.
